  5. The IBM Music Feature is compatible with the IBM Personal Computer

  13. PlayRec is a simple to use IBM PC Music Feature card controller and
  14. multi-track recorder.  The controller function allows the user to
  15. select the IBM PC Music Feature voice configuration for real-time
  16. playing on a Musical Instrument Digital Interface(1) (MIDI) music
  17. keyboard.  The multi-track recorder may record the music generated by
  18. the MIDI music keyboard along with an automatically generated
  19. accompaniment, or may record up to 16 independent tracks of music
  20. from the music keyboard.

  22. Compose is an advanced music composer which utilizes the IBM PC Music
  23. Feature, and allows the user to create either simple or complex
  24. multi-part music compositions in standard music notation.  Once
  25. written, the music score may be manipulated using the built-in music
  26. editor to achieve the desired final composition.  The music may be
  27. played or printed as desired.

  52. The IBM Music Feature is designed on a full length (13 inch) Personal
  53. Computer option card.  The card contains the necessary circuitry and
  54. logic to generate the musical sounds of the 336 different
  55. voices/instruments.  Up to eight (8) notes may be played
  56. simultaneously.  These notes may be selected from one or more of the
  57. 336 available voices/instruments.  The IBM Personal Computer Music
  58. Feature also contains four (4) external connectors:  one connector
  59. for Headphone listening, two connectors for Audio Output (right and
  60. left stereo channels) and one for the MIDI (musical instruments
  61. digital interface) device interface.

  63. For additional performance, up to two (2) IBM Personal Computer Music
  64. Feature Cards may be installed in a system unit, assuming available
  65. card space, bringing the total number of notes which may be played

  391. conventional memory from the 256KB address to the 640KB
  392. address.  It is not necessary to use separate memory modules
  393. or cards for this purpose.  The remainder of the adapter
  394. memory will be available for the "Expanded Memory
  395. Specification" function.  Up to two PC DOS virtual disk
  396. applications may run under "Expanded Memory Specification".
  397. The IBM 2MB Expanded Memory Adapter memory may be
  398. apportioned to the virtual disk and other "Expanded Memory
  399. Specification" application programs in 16KB increments.  The
  400. IBM 3270 Workstation Program Versions 1.0 and 1.1 contain
  401. drivers.  These "Expanded Memory Specification" device
  402. driver programs provide a set of standard routines that
  403. allow applications to access memory on the adapter (up to
  404. 2MB) through four 16KB pages within the IBM Personal
  405. Computer address space.

  408. provides 2MB of expanded memory function for IBM Personal
  409. System/2 Models 50 and 60.  IBM Personal System/2 80286
  410. Expanded Memory Adapter/A also supports the device drivers
  411. resident within the IBM 3270 Workstation Program Versions
  412. 1.0 and 1.1.

  414. Also, IBM Personal System/2 80286 Expanded Memory Adapter/A

  825. The IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive is a mass storage device
  826. designed specifically for IBM Personal Computers.  It should
  827. be viewed as a supplement to a fixed disk, and for
  828. applications where removability of the disk is important
  829. (i.e., security, archive, backup, etc.).

  831. The 3363 is available as both external models and internal
  832. feature.  The external drive is a stand-alone unit with its
  833. own power supply, while the internal feature derives its
  834. power from the PC.  The 3363 can be attached to most current
  835. models of the IBM PC as well as all models of the IBM
  836. Personal System/2.  The exceptions are: PCjr(tm), PC
  837. Convertible, the PC/370 models, and the RT/PC.  The IBM 3363
  838. attaches to the IBM PC via a new controller card which plugs
  839. into the system board and is connected to the PC standard
  840. I/O BUS.  One or two drives can be attached to the
  841. controller card.

  843. The IBM 3363 utilizes a small 130MM (5.25 inch) write once,
  844. removable optical disk, housed in a protective cartridge.
  845. The optical disk is a plastic media with recording on one
  846. side.  The cartridge has a 200 million byte capacity.
  847. Depending on the PC model, from one to eight IBM Optical
  848. Disk Drives may be attached yielding a total of 200MB to
  849. 1.6GB of on-line direct access storage.

  851. The IBM 3363 utilizes a spiral format consisting of 512 byte
  852. sectors, 23 sectors per track, and 17,100 tracks.  Data is
  853. read or written using a Laser Read/Write head.  The IBM
  854. Optical Disk Cartridge can be pre-recorded with data much
  855. like diskettes are today.  Thus large electronic text or
  856. data bases can be distributed on a reliable media that can
  857. also be updated as the data changes.
  858.  
  859. The IBM 3363 has a burst data rate of up to 2.5
  860. Megabits/second at the output of the read amplifier, with
  861. peak data transfer rate being a function of the attaching
  862. system.  Data is recorded contiguously along the spiral
  863. starting at the first available sector.  The end user
  864. application can optimize performance by taking advantage of
  865. this recording technique to produce a 64,000 byte streaming
  866. effect, when doing large sequential transfers of data, with
  867. a single command.

  869. Average seek time over one-third of the disk surface (5,700
  870. tracks; 67 million bytes) is less than 230 milliseconds.
  871. The IBM 3363 also has a shorter average seek time of less
  872. than 45 milliseconds for up to 101 tracks (1.2 million
  873. bytes).  This is accomplished by simply changing the angle
  874. of the laser beam.
  875.  
  876. The IBM 3363 is supported by new software and optical BIOS
  877. which provide extensions to DOS.  The software design
  878. incorporates a directory structure that optimizes the
  879. directory search speed and the disk space utilization.  The
  880. directory design in conjunction with a new File System
  881. Driver makes the IBM 3363 appear rewritable to the end user
  882. application.  The software support also provides
  883. compatibility with most DOS commands.
  884.  
  885. New functions such as multiple versions are available with
  886. the IBM 3363 software.  With this support the end user can
  887. keep back versions of the same file name.  Manipulation of
  888. versions is supported by new commands, designed to look like
  889. standard DOS commands.  They provide the hooks to enable end
  890. user applications to take advantage of the versions
  891. capability for any file.  Another new function, provided by
  892. the IBM 3363 software support, is the ability to create data
  893. files greater than 32 million bytes in size.  This provides
  894. flexibility in the end user's capability of using the 200
  895. million byte capacity of the IBM Optical Disk Cartridge.
  896. There is also a new Save/Restore function allowing the end
  897. user to save only changed data files, while maintaining the
  898. integrity of the directory structure.  This ability together
  899. with versions support provides end users with an automatic
  900. audit trail and archive for future reference.  Restoring
  901. data files can be accomplished by file name, a particular
  902. version of a file, all versions of a file, or all files.

  1189. This feature provides a 114MB fixed-disk drive for use as an optional
  1190. second or third drive in an RT PC Model 125 The disk is formatted to
  1191. be compatible with the RT PC Extended ESDI Magnetic Media Adapter
  1192. which is standard in each RT PC Model 125.  Average access is 28 ms,
  1193. transfer rate is 10 Mbits per second.  The drive has the same 5-1/4
  1194. inch form factor as the existing RT PC System drives, and uses the
  1195. ESDI interface.  The drive operates at 3600 RPM, and has 35 sectors
  1196. per track with 512 bytes per sector.  This disk drive and the
  1197. standard RT PC Extended ESDI Magnetic Media Adapter in the new series
  1198. model 115 together provide a large performance increase over the RT
  1199. PC 70 MB ESDI Fixed-Disk (#6941)(61X6941) or the 40MB Fixed-Disk
  1200. Drive (#4735)(6294735) through 1:1 sector interleaving and Direct
  1201. Memory Access (DMA) of disk data.  AIX Version 2.1 is a prerequisite
  1202. for support of the 114MB Extended ESDI Fixed-Disk Drive.  (Not
  1203. available as an optional feature for any model of the IBM 6151, nor
  1204. for the IBM 6150 Models 020 or 025.

  1737. Independent Software Publishers have produced programs that are
  1738. available in 3.5-inch media also.
  1739.  
  1740. Higher reliability, rugged packaging, greater storage capacity and
  1741. smaller size of the 3.5-inch diskette media and drive prompted IBM to
  1742. use this design for the new IBM Personal System/2 Family of products.
  1743.  
  1744. The IBM Personal System/2 Family system units utilize 3.5 inch
  1745. (internal) diskette drives only.  All IBM Personal System/2 Family
  1746. systems can read and write 3.5-inch (1MB) diskettes which store a
  1747. total of 720K bytes of information.  The IBM Personal System/2 Models
  1748. 50, 60 and 80 can also read and write the 3.5-inch (2MB) diskettes
  1749. which store 1.44M bytes of information.
  1750.  
  1751. Consideration of customer requirements for transition to 3.5 inch
  1752. media led to development of devices to facilitate migration to
  1753. 3.5-inch media products and for coexistence with 5.25-inch media
  1754. products.
  1755.  
  1756. Two external diskette drive products (3.5-inch and 5.25-inch) one
  1757. internal diskette drive (3.5-inch) option and  electronic Data
  1758. Migration Facility accessory have been developed by IBM in support of
  1759. this media move to 3.5-inch.  Use of these devices, networks and
  1760. other save restore/data interchange products provide the bridge
  1761. between the 3.5-inch and the 5.25 inch products.
  1762.  
  1763. TRANSITION CATEGORIES
  1764.  
  1765. The following definitions are used to define transition categories.
  1766.  
  1767. Migration      A one way transfer of data and allowable* programs
  1768.                from 5.25-inch to 3.5-inch media.
  1769.  
  1770. Coexistence    A facility that provides for 5.25-inch family
  1771.                environment and 3.5-inch to exchange data to reside
  1772.                together but independent of each other.
  1773.  
  1774. Backup         A facility that provides a means to copy the existing
  1775.                data and allowable programs so that in case the
  1776.                original media is damaged the data can be restored.
  1777.                These facilities also support migration and
  1778.                coexistence.
  1779.  
  1780. *  Allowable programs are defined as IBM and Independent Software
  1781.    Publisher programs which may be "backed up"  or operated in
  1782.    accordance with the license agreement and the software
  1783.    manufacturer's operating instructions.
  1784.  
  1785. IBM grants permission to transfer IBM Licensed Programs to a new
  1786. medium.  No additional rights are granted beyond those stated in the
  1787. original IBM Program License Agreement.
  1788.  
  1789. Permission to transfer non-IBM programs is subject to the applicable
  1790. licensing agreement that governs program use.  It is recommended that
  1791. the program supplier be contacted to determine restrictions on
  1792. transfer.
  1793.  
  1794. Since some programs are "copy protected" or may restrict the number
  1795. of copies, the user has the responsibility to assure the transferred
  1796. program functions before erasing other copies of the program.
  1797.

  1801. in media management and/or conversion.  These devices support

  1830. 267, 268, 277, 278, 286 (6450258 FC#0258) and IBM Personal Computer
  1831. AT(R) Models 319 and 339 (6450357 FC#0357) It allows the user to
  1832. utilize programs that are available on 3.5-inch diskettes, or to save
  1833. data onto 3.5-inch diskettes for use with an IBM Personal Computer
  1834. Convertible or IBM Personal IBM Personal System/2 Family system
  1835. products, or to copy allowable 5.25-inch programs.

  1847. IBM Personal Computer 3.5 Inch (720KB) External Diskette Drive (4865

  1850. Description:  The 4865 is offered on the IBM Personal Computer, IBM
  1851. Personal Computer XT and IBM Personal Computer AT.  The external
  1852.  
  1853. diskette drive allows the utilization of data and allowable programs
  1854. on 3.5-inch diskettes.  DOS and other programs requiring "A"  Drive
  1855. cannot be loaded from this product.

  1871. Transition Application:  The addition of an optional 4865 will
  1872. typically occur where that system is the primary office system and
  1873. the user wants to utilize supported applications distributed on
  1874. 3.5-inch diskettes.  It provides for coexistence of 3.5-inch
  1875. diskettes with 5.25-inch 1.2MB and 5.25-inch 360KB diskette drives on
  1876. the same system and will allow the fewest number of additional
  1877. External Diskette Drives to be purchased where 3.5-inch systems
  1878. outnumber 5.25-inch systems.
  1879.  
  1880. The 3.5-inch (720KB) External Diskette drive provides I/O expansion
  1881. for "B"  drive address and higher and can be a third diskette drive
  1882. on the system.
  1883.  
  1884. By attaching a 4865 prior to 3.5-inch system arrival, data and
  1885. allowable programs can be prepared in advance for the new system.
  1886.  
  1887. NEW DEVICES
  1888.  
  1889. 5.25 Inch 360KB External Diskette Drive (4869)
  1890.  
  1891. The 4869 is an optional external 5.25-inch diskette "B drive"
  1892. attachment for the IBM Personal System/2 systems and requires an
  1893. adapter option.
  1894.  
  1895. Attachment of a 4869 allows users to convert data files and allowable
  1896. programs or to execute 5.25-inch media programs which do not require
  1897. "A" drive capability.
  1898.  
  1899. The 4869 is available for attachment to the IBM Personal System/2
  1900. 3.5-inch system units to enhance conversion or operation of 5.25-inch
  1901. system applications.  For specific compatibility see the media drive
  1902. compatibility table.  For more detailed information, see VAD 87-080
  1903. and PCD 87-106.  The 4869 is supported on Models 30-021, 50, 60, and
  1904. 80.
  1905.  
  1906. Transition Application:  In an establishment with multiple 5.25-inch
  1907. systems installed, the most likely process for converting to the new
  1908.  
  1909. systems will be on a phase-in basis.  Given a gradual addition of
  1910. 3.5-inch systems, the 5.25-inch systems will outnumber the new
  1911. systems for a period of time.  By attaching a4869 to the IBM Personal
  1912. System/2 Family systems, it will allow all systems to coexist.
  1913.

  1915.  
  1916. Example:  If the installed base has 10 IBM Personal Computer XTs and
  1917.           one IBM Personal System/2 Family system, the purchase of
  1918.           one 5.25 Inch 360KB External Diskette Drive (4869) will
  1919.           allow complete conversion.
  1920.  
  1921. If the number of 3.5-inch systems will exceed the 5.25-inch systems,
  1922. the 3.5-inch Internal or External drives should be considered.
  1923.  
  1924. Data Migration Facility
  1925.  
  1926. The Data Migration Facility (1501224 FC 5003) is a parallel port to
  1927. parallel port electronic data transfer device which can connect an
  1928. IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal Computer, IBM Personal
  1929. Computer XT or IBM Personal Computer AT to an IBM Personal System/2
  1930. Family system.  It will be used by those users who want to transfer
  1931. data and allowable programs from their 5.25-inch system to the new
  1932. systems fixed disk or 3.5-inch media.
  1933.  
  1934. The conversion method requires a standard IBM printer cable (PN
  1935. 1525612) to connect the IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal
  1936. Computer, IBM Personal Computer XT or IBM Personal Computer AT.
  1937. parallel port to the IBM Personal IBM Personal System/2Family
  1938. systems.  Conversion is accomplished with provided software
  1939. consisting of complementary send and receive programs that emulate
  1940. the DOS Copy Command.  One way communication capability from diskette
  1941. to diskette, fixed disk to fixed disk, or any combination thereof is
  1942. supported.  The Family Data Migration Facility packaging contains a
  1943. 5.25-inch diskette with a "send"  program, the connector itself, and
  1944. the appropriate instructions for use.  A "receive"  program, also
  1945. required, has been included on the Starter Diskette packaged with
  1946. each IBM Personal System/2 Family system.  DOS 2.0 or later is
  1947. required for the sending system and DOS 3.3 is required for the
  1948. receiving system.  An IBM Personal Computer Printer Cable (PN
  1949. 1525612) must be attached to one of the following printer cards on
  1950. the host IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal Computer, IBM
  1951. Personal Computer XT.  IBM Personal Computer AT:

  1965. Host-connected/LAN-connected Systems
  1966.  
  1967. In environments where different systems are currently connected
  1968. through a Host or are on the same LAN, transfer of data from one
  1969. system to another is common practice.  The 3.5-inch systems can
  1970. participate in this exchange method as well.

  1972. OTHER OPTIONS
  1973.  
  1974. 3363 Optical Disk Drive
  1975.  
  1976. The IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive is a new high performance
  1977. removable disk storage device.  It is designed to attach to the
  1978. Personal Computer, Personal Computer XT, IBM Portable Personal
  1979. Computer, IBM Personal Computer AT, PC/3270, AT/3270 and IBM Personal
  1980. System/2 Family Systems via a special controller card connecting to
  1981. the Personal Computer I/O Bus.  Two drives can be attached to a
  1982. single controller card.  The 3363 is available in three versions:
  1983. model A01 attaches to the current IBM Personal Computers and IBM
  1984. Personal System/2 Family model 30, model A11 attaches to the IBM
  1985. Personal System/2 Family models 50, 60 and 80, model B01 attaches to
  1986. both the A01 and A11 as a second drive.  The adapter and software are
  1987. included with the drive.  The storage device is recommended as an
  1988. alternative to a fixed disk, as a supplement to a fixed disk for
  1989. higher capacity storage, and for applications where removability of
  1990. the disk is important (e.g.,  security, archive, portable data, and
  1991. personal disks for individual uses).

  1993. Optional Feature (63X4166 FC 8700):  The 8560 and 8580 200 MB
  1994. Internal Optical Disk feature provides the same function as the 3363
  1995. Model A11.
  1996.  
  1997. Transition Application:  Two 3363 Optical Disk Drives can support
  1998. migration and/or coexistence.  This becomes a viable method for
  1999. migration or coexistence when both system units have Optical Diskette
  2000. drives already present to support backup and restore on each system.
  2001.  
  2002. IBM 6157 Streaming Tape Drive
  2003.  
  2004. The 6157 Streaming Tape Drive is a 1/4 inch 55MB tape drive unit for
  2005. attachment to the IBM Personal Computer, Personal Computer XT,
  2006. Personal Computer AT, IBM 3270-Personal Computer, 3270 Personal
  2007. Computer AT, 3270 Personal Computer XT Model 286 and IBM Personal
  2008. System/2 Family System Units.
  2009.  
  2010. The SY-TOS/IBM Tape Utilities (SY-TOS) Version 1.1, when combined
  2011. with the IBM 6157 Streaming Tape Drive and the appropriate adapter
  2012. card, provides an easy-to-use, versatile, and high performance tape
  2013. Save/Restore system for IBM Personal System/2 Family and IBM Personal
  2014. Computers.
  2015.  
  2016. SY-TOS/IBM supports file partition, or entire disk backup and
  2017. restore.  A security system, library system, multiple file sessions
  2018. on the same tape and on-line Help system are features in SY-TOS.
  2019.  
  2020. Ships with both 5.25-inch and 3.5-inch media.  SY-TOS/IBM is
  2021. supported by DOS level 2.1 and higher.
  2022.  
  2023. Transition Application:  SY-TOS/IBM 6157 Tape Utilities Version 1.1
  2024. supports large storage requirements for existing IBM Personal
  2025. Computer inventories.  Where migrating or coexistence with large
  2026. amounts of data among IBM Personal Computer Users is required, the
  2027. 6157 Streaming Tape Drive provides a fast and efficient solution.
  2028. Installation of adapters in multiple system units and sharing the
  2029. tape drive allows data interchange of large files at minimal expense,
  2030. while providing for back-up of data/programs.
