- IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive
-
- The IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive is a new high performance
- removable disk storage device. It utilizes the high density
- characteristics of optical storage technology to achieve
- very high capacity (200 million bytes) on a small 130MM
- (5.25 Inch) removable disk. It is designed to attach to the
- PC, PC/XT(TM), Portable, PC/AT(R), PC/3270, AT/3270, and all
- models of the IBM Personal System/2 via a special controller
- card connecting to the PC I/O Bus. Two drives can be
- attached to a single controller card. Depending on the IBM
- PC model, from one to four controller cards can be supported
- yielding from 200MB to 1.6GB of removable, write once,
- on-line storage capacity. The 3363 consists of three models
- (A01, A11, and B01), which are external standalone units.
- There is also an internal optical disk drive for Personal
- System/2 models 60 and 80 only. This drive is feature #8700
- on those models. The device software contains a file driver
- providing commands which are compatible with most PC/DOS
- magnetic disk commands. It also provides extensions to
- PC/DOS supporting multiple versions of files and files of
- greater than 32 million bytes. The 3363 is recommended as a
- supplement to a fixed disk for higher capacity storage, and
- for applications where removability of the disk is important
- (i.e., security, archive, portable data, and personal disks
- for individual uses).

- DESCRIPTION
-
- The IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive is a mass storage device
- designed specifically for IBM Personal Computers. It should
- be viewed as a supplement to a fixed disk, and for
- applications where removability of the disk is important
- (i.e., security, archive, backup, etc.).
-
- The 3363 is available as both external models and internal
- feature. The external drive is a stand-alone unit with its
- own power supply, while the internal feature derives its
- power from the PC. The 3363 can be attached to most current
- models of the IBM PC as well as all models of the IBM
- Personal System/2. The exceptions are: PCjr(tm), PC
- Convertible, the PC/370 models, and the RT/PC. The IBM 3363
- attaches to the IBM PC via a new controller card which plugs
- into the system board and is connected to the PC standard
- I/O BUS. One or two drives can be attached to the
- controller card.
-
- The IBM 3363 utilizes a small 130MM (5.25 inch) write once,
- removable optical disk, housed in a protective cartridge.
- The optical disk is a plastic media with recording on one
- side. The cartridge has a 200 million byte capacity.
- Depending on the PC model, from one to eight IBM Optical
- Disk Drives may be attached yielding a total of 200MB to
- 1.6GB of on-line direct access storage.
-
- The IBM 3363 utilizes a spiral format consisting of 512 byte
- sectors, 23 sectors per track, and 17,100 tracks. Data is
- read or written using a Laser Read/Write head. The IBM
- Optical Disk Cartridge can be pre-recorded with data much
- like diskettes are today. Thus large electronic text or
- data bases can be distributed on a reliable media that can
- also be updated as the data changes.
-
- The IBM 3363 has a burst data rate of up to 2.5
- Megabits/second at the output of the read amplifier, with
- peak data transfer rate being a function of the attaching
- system. Data is recorded contiguously along the spiral
- starting at the first available sector. The end user
- application can optimize performance by taking advantage of
- this recording technique to produce a 64,000 byte streaming
- effect, when doing large sequential transfers of data, with
- a single command.
-
- Average seek time over one-third of the disk surface (5,700
- tracks; 67 million bytes) is less than 230 milliseconds.
- The IBM 3363 also has a shorter average seek time of less
- than 45 milliseconds for up to 101 tracks (1.2 million
- bytes). This is accomplished by simply changing the angle
- of the laser beam.
-
- The IBM 3363 is supported by new software and optical BIOS
- which provide extensions to DOS. The software design
- incorporates a directory structure that optimizes the
- directory search speed and the disk space utilization. The
- directory design in conjunction with a new File System
- Driver makes the IBM 3363 appear rewritable to the end user
- application. The software support also provides
- compatibility with most DOS commands.
-
- New functions such as multiple versions are available with
- the IBM 3363 software. With this support the end user can
- keep back versions of the same file name. Manipulation of
- versions is supported by new commands, designed to look like
- standard DOS commands. They provide the hooks to enable end
- user applications to take advantage of the versions
- capability for any file. Another new function, provided by
- the IBM 3363 software support, is the ability to create data
- files greater than 32 million bytes in size. This provides
- flexibility in the end user's capability of using the 200
- million byte capacity of the IBM Optical Disk Cartridge.
- There is also a new Save/Restore function allowing the end
- user to save only changed data files, while maintaining the
- integrity of the directory structure. This ability together
- with versions support provides end users with an automatic
- audit trail and archive for future reference. Restoring
- data files can be accomplished by file name, a particular
- version of a file, all versions of a file, or all files.

- SCHEDULE
-
- General availability of the 3363 A01 and B01 is planned for
- 2nd Quarter 1987, the A11 is planned for 3rd Quarter 1987,
- and Feature #8700 is planned for 4th Quarter 1987.
-
- The IBM 3363 Optical Disk Drive is designed for use on all
- supported, installed and on order IBM PCs where higher
- capacity on-line storage is required. It should be viewed
- as a supplement to a fixed disk, and for applications where
- removability of the disk is important (i.e., security,
- archive, etc.).
-
- The IBM 3363 is IBM's first mass storage device designed
- specifically for the IBM PC.
-
- The IBM 3363 should be the storage unit of choice for those
- IBM PC end users requiring a large capacity removable
- storage device. Its 200MB capacity greatly expands the
- on-line storage capability of the IBM PC. It also permits
- the creation of files requiring greater than 32 million
- bytes.
-
- The IBM 3363 removable disk offers end users an excellent
- archive media for compact storage of electronic reports, and
- digital images. It also meets customer requirements for
- economic distribution of large quantities of data, reports,
- and electronic text to other locations of their
- organization.
-
- The IBM PC end users with large magnetic disks can use the
- IBM 3363 software to automatically build a history of
- updated files from their magnetic disk to the IBM 3363,
- where they are stored as versions of the same file name.
- This gives the end user a historical archive of their files
- and can be used to restore lost data to the magnetic disk.

- "5.25-inch to 3.5-inch Media Overview","IBM Announce",04-02-1987
-
- 5.25-inch to 3.5-inch Media Overview
-
- Technological improvement and increased user requirements are common
- to the industry and continue to drive product change. The 3.5-inch
- diskette drive in the personal computer marketplace is an example of
- such change. Critical to this type of change is a coherent method of
- managing the change with minimal impact on our customers ongoing
- information processing activities. This overview describes elements
- of the transition needs brought about by the growing use of 3.5-inch
- diskette-based products and the large existing inventory of 5.25-inch
- diskette-based devices.
-
- A significant number of IBM applications and operating systems are
- available in both 3.5 inch and 5.25 inch media. In addition, many
- Independent Software Publishers have produced programs that are
- available in 3.5-inch media also.
-
- Higher reliability, rugged packaging, greater storage capacity and
- smaller size of the 3.5-inch diskette media and drive prompted IBM to
- use this design for the new IBM Personal System/2 Family of products.
-
- The IBM Personal System/2 Family system units utilize 3.5 inch
- (internal) diskette drives only. All IBM Personal System/2 Family
- systems can read and write 3.5-inch (1MB) diskettes which store a
- total of 720K bytes of information. The IBM Personal System/2 Models
- 50, 60 and 80 can also read and write the 3.5-inch (2MB) diskettes
- which store 1.44M bytes of information.
-
- Consideration of customer requirements for transition to 3.5 inch
- media led to development of devices to facilitate migration to
- 3.5-inch media products and for coexistence with 5.25-inch media
- products.
-
- Two external diskette drive products (3.5-inch and 5.25-inch) one
- internal diskette drive (3.5-inch) option and electronic Data
- Migration Facility accessory have been developed by IBM in support of
- this media move to 3.5-inch. Use of these devices, networks and
- other save restore/data interchange products provide the bridge
- between the 3.5-inch and the 5.25 inch products.
-
- TRANSITION CATEGORIES
-
- The following definitions are used to define transition categories.
-
- Migration A one way transfer of data and allowable* programs
- from 5.25-inch to 3.5-inch media.
-
- Coexistence A facility that provides for 5.25-inch family
- environment and 3.5-inch to exchange data to reside
- together but independent of each other.
-
- Backup A facility that provides a means to copy the existing
- data and allowable programs so that in case the
- original media is damaged the data can be restored.
- These facilities also support migration and
- coexistence.
-
- * Allowable programs are defined as IBM and Independent Software
- Publisher programs which may be "backed up" or operated in
- accordance with the license agreement and the software
- manufacturer's operating instructions.
-
- IBM grants permission to transfer IBM Licensed Programs to a new
- medium. No additional rights are granted beyond those stated in the
- original IBM Program License Agreement.
-
- Permission to transfer non-IBM programs is subject to the applicable
- licensing agreement that governs program use. It is recommended that
- the program supplier be contacted to determine restrictions on
- transfer.
-
- Since some programs are "copy protected" or may restrict the number
- of copies, the user has the responsibility to assure the transferred
- program functions before erasing other copies of the program.
-
- TRANSITION DEVICES
-
- The following IBM developed devices are available to assist the user
- in media management and/or conversion. These devices support
- migration or coexistence requirements for different user environments.

-
- Transition Application: The addition of the optional IBM 3.5-inch
- 720KB Internal Diskette Drive, to a IBM Personal Computer XT or IBM
- Personal Computer AT will typically occur where that system is the
- primary office system and the user wants to utilize data and
- supported applications on 3.5-inch diskettes.
-
- IBM Personal Computer 3.5 Inch (720KB) External Diskette Drive (4865
- Model 001 & 002)
-
- Description: The 4865 is offered on the IBM Personal Computer, IBM
- Personal Computer XT and IBM Personal Computer AT. The external
-
- diskette drive allows the utilization of data and allowable programs
- on 3.5-inch diskettes. DOS and other programs requiring "A" Drive
- cannot be loaded from this product.
-
- Two models are available.
-
- Model 1:
-
- o Attaches to all models of 5150, 5155 and 5160 using the existing
- 5.25-inch Diskette Drive Adapter
- o Requires DOS 3.2 (5.25-inch)
-
- Model 2:
-
- o Attaches to all 5170 models and Personal Computer XT Model 286
- using the External Diskette Drive Adapter provided
- o Requires DOS 3.2 (5.25-inch)
-
- Transition Application: The addition of an optional 4865 will
- typically occur where that system is the primary office system and
- the user wants to utilize supported applications distributed on
- 3.5-inch diskettes. It provides for coexistence of 3.5-inch
- diskettes with 5.25-inch 1.2MB and 5.25-inch 360KB diskette drives on
- the same system and will allow the fewest number of additional
- External Diskette Drives to be purchased where 3.5-inch systems
- outnumber 5.25-inch systems.
-
- The 3.5-inch (720KB) External Diskette drive provides I/O expansion
- for "B" drive address and higher and can be a third diskette drive
- on the system.
-
- By attaching a 4865 prior to 3.5-inch system arrival, data and
- allowable programs can be prepared in advance for the new system.
-
- NEW DEVICES
-
- 5.25 Inch 360KB External Diskette Drive (4869)
-
- The 4869 is an optional external 5.25-inch diskette "B drive"
- attachment for the IBM Personal System/2 systems and requires an
- adapter option.
-
- Attachment of a 4869 allows users to convert data files and allowable
- programs or to execute 5.25-inch media programs which do not require
- "A" drive capability.
-
- The 4869 is available for attachment to the IBM Personal System/2
- 3.5-inch system units to enhance conversion or operation of 5.25-inch
- system applications. For specific compatibility see the media drive
- compatibility table. For more detailed information, see VAD 87-080
- and PCD 87-106. The 4869 is supported on Models 30-021, 50, 60, and
- 80.
-
- Transition Application: In an establishment with multiple 5.25-inch
- systems installed, the most likely process for converting to the new
-
- systems will be on a phase-in basis. Given a gradual addition of
- 3.5-inch systems, the 5.25-inch systems will outnumber the new
- systems for a period of time. By attaching a4869 to the IBM Personal
- System/2 Family systems, it will allow all systems to coexist.
-
- A Quick Reference Card is provided.
-
- Example: If the installed base has 10 IBM Personal Computer XTs and
- one IBM Personal System/2 Family system, the purchase of
- one 5.25 Inch 360KB External Diskette Drive (4869) will
- allow complete conversion.
-
- If the number of 3.5-inch systems will exceed the 5.25-inch systems,
- the 3.5-inch Internal or External drives should be considered.
-
- Data Migration Facility
-
- The Data Migration Facility (1501224 FC 5003) is a parallel port to
- parallel port electronic data transfer device which can connect an
- IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal Computer, IBM Personal
- Computer XT or IBM Personal Computer AT to an IBM Personal System/2
- Family system. It will be used by those users who want to transfer
- data and allowable programs from their 5.25-inch system to the new
- systems fixed disk or 3.5-inch media.
-
- The conversion method requires a standard IBM printer cable (PN
- 1525612) to connect the IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal
- Computer, IBM Personal Computer XT or IBM Personal Computer AT.
- parallel port to the IBM Personal IBM Personal System/2Family
- systems. Conversion is accomplished with provided software
- consisting of complementary send and receive programs that emulate
- the DOS Copy Command. One way communication capability from diskette
- to diskette, fixed disk to fixed disk, or any combination thereof is
- supported. The Family Data Migration Facility packaging contains a
- 5.25-inch diskette with a "send" program, the connector itself, and
- the appropriate instructions for use. A "receive" program, also
- required, has been included on the Starter Diskette packaged with
- each IBM Personal System/2 Family system. DOS 2.0 or later is
- required for the sending system and DOS 3.3 is required for the
- receiving system. An IBM Personal Computer Printer Cable (PN
- 1525612) must be attached to one of the following printer cards on
- the host IBM Personal Computer, IBM Portable Personal Computer, IBM
- Personal Computer XT. IBM Personal Computer AT:
-
- o Parallel interface card (#1505200)
- o Monochrome/printer card (#1504900)
- o Serial/parallel card (#6450215)
-
- Transition Application: This conversion method can be used by
- customers that are replacing their 5.25-inch system with a IBM
- Personal System/2 Family system. Migration using this device
- requires that the two systems be within the cable distance of the IBM
- printer cable (PN 1525612).
-
- A Quick Reference Card is provided.
-
- Host-connected/LAN-connected Systems
-
- In environments where different systems are currently connected
- through a Host or are on the same LAN, transfer of data from one
- system to another is common practice. The 3.5-inch systems can
- participate in this exchange method as well.
-

- MEDIA/DRIVE COMPATIBILITY TABLE
-
- The following table identifies the minimum supported level of DOS
- required to Read-Write-Format the applicable media in the installed
- diskette drives.
-
- DOS levels are Downward Compatible with respect to diskette
- formatting therefore prior formats are supported.
-
- To use this chart, first find your diskette drive and IBM Personal
- Computer across the top of the table. Then coming down the left hand
- column, find your media. The intersection of the "Read", "Write",
- "Format" row and your Diskette Drive and IBM Personal Computer Column
- identifies the minimum DOS level required to support the function.
- Where "NO" appears, it indicates either unreliable operation will
- occur or the product cannot perform the function. It is particularly
- important to adhere to NOTE "2" for satisfactory performance.
